Mystery games work best when they trust players to slow down and pay attention. They reward curiosity, patience, and careful thinking. This week’s Wishlist Wednesday highlights story-rich indie mystery games that put narrative and character first.

Some focus on grounded crime stories. Others lean into stylized horror or strange sci-fi worlds. However, all of them value storytelling over spectacle.
If you enjoy mysteries that linger, these upcoming games deserve a spot on your Steam wishlist.
🔍 Grounded Crime & Psychological Mystery

The Big Hollow: 1982
Developer: Krams Design
The Big Hollow: 1982 is a dark, atmospheric 2D murder mystery inspired by grounded serial-killer fiction such as The Silence of the Lambs and True Detective. At the same time, its gameplay draws from deduction-focused classics like The Golden Idol and Ace Attorney.

The story takes place in America’s coal country in 1982. You play as Desmond, a young FBI recruit reviewing a recently solved double homicide. At this point in history, the idea of a serial killer is still new. As a result, the case becomes both an investigation and a test of emerging profiling methods.
Gameplay centers on observation and interpretation. You collect evidence, form questions, and test conclusions. Instead of guiding you directly, the game asks you to think like an investigator.

🩸 Stylized Killing Games & Social Deduction

Kumitantei: Old-School Slaughter
Developer: Mango Factory
Kumitantei™: Old-School Slaughter is an episodic murder-mystery ADV card battler with strong retro anime influences. Sixteen elite students awaken trapped inside a decaying bunker. From there, they are forced into a kill-or-be-killed experiment.

However, survival depends on more than luck. Investigation, debate, and social bonds all play a role. Inspired by Danganronpa and Ace Attorney, the game blends visual-novel storytelling with deck-building mechanics.
Meanwhile, bonding with classmates unlocks new cards and abilities. These relationships directly affect how debates unfold. With six planned episodes beginning in early 2026, the narrative grows more complex over time.

🌒 Character-Driven Sci-Fi & Weird West Mystery

Talewarden: Riders of the New Day
Developer: Bucket Hat Cat
Talewarden: Riders of the New Day is a weird-west narrative adventure set on Notoria, an alien planet where the sun never sets. Time has stopped, and no one knows why.

As Talewarden, you explore more than 30 locations while following the pull of a mysterious voice in your head. In contrast to traditional detective stories, the mystery unfolds through conversations, exploration, and emotional choices.
Campfire talks, romance options, and loyalty quests shape relationships. Ultimately, you must decide whether time should be restored or if escape is the better option.

🖤 Why These Mysteries Stand Out
Each of these games approaches mystery from a different angle. One focuses on psychological profiling. Another emphasizes trials and social deduction. The third leans into character-driven exploration.
Despite their differences, all three prioritize story-first design. They trust players to think, reflect, and connect the dots.
🌾 Also Worth Watching — Supernatural Mystery

No One Leaves the Field
For readers who prefer supernatural mystery, No One Leaves the Field offers a quieter and more unsettling experience. The game takes place in a cursed field where escape may not be possible.
