Shape Swarm DevLog: New Shapes, PowerUp Improvements, and Boss Battle Integration

Shape Swarm’s main game is getting very close to completion.

This week was about closing the loop on the core experience and making sure the game runs the way it was always intended to. We added a few new shapes, refined enemy behavior, and pushed the full gameplay loop into a state where a complete run now works from start to finish.

That’s always a satisfying moment in development. When the systems finally connect and the game starts to feel like a cohesive experience instead of a collection of mechanics.

We also took some of the feedback we’ve received and used it to refine the in-game PowerUps. Some adjustments were made to balance and clarity so the upgrades feel more impactful during a run. Small tweaks here can make a big difference in how the game feels moment to moment.

Another big milestone this week was integrating the boss battle along with the game states leading up to it. The boss fight now sits at the end of the run where it belongs, and the systems that lead the player there are in place. Getting this connected is an important step toward the final version of the game.

With the full loop now running, development is shifting more into polish mode. I’ve started working on new music tracks that will help carry the pacing of a run, including a second track that ramps up the energy once the player is deeper into the game.

We’re also beginning to plan out some meta progression upgrades — things like regeneration, shield increases, or other bonuses that players can unlock between runs. These systems will give players a sense of longer-term progression while still keeping the arcade feel of the game intact.

There’s still work to do, but Shape Swarm is really starting to come together.
