Dread Neighbor, developed by Ghostcase, is a first-person psychological horror game inspired by modern Chinese horror. It follows a young woman who moves into an unusually inexpensive apartment while living and working alone in the city. The low rent quickly becomes less appealing as the building’s silence, narrow hallways, damp rooms, and hidden corners begin feeding an overwhelming sense that someone—or something—is watching her.

Dread Neighbor builds its horror around urban isolation and the vulnerability of living alone. The protagonist has seen things others could not since childhood, but the apartment appears to amplify that ability. Eyes begin appearing throughout familiar rooms, watching from walls, openings, and places that should be empty.
The environment can also change depending on where the player looks—and where they do not. Everyday routines gradually become threatening as ordinary spaces are invaded by anomalies and an unseen presence.
Rather than relying entirely on supernatural scares, the game mixes paranormal horror with more grounded fears involving solitude, stalking, and personal safety.
Multiple Perspectives and Connected Victims
The story is presented through several characters rather than remaining limited to a single protagonist. Each perspective reveals another part of the apartment building’s history and the experiences of those affected by it.
This multi-perspective structure allows the game to shift its tone and reconsider events through different victims. Some Steam players particularly praised this approach, saying the changing perspectives made them question whether they would continue playing as the same character.
Chases, Clues, and Multiple Endings
Dread Neighbor is primarily a narrative-focused horror experience, but it includes chase sequences in which players must escape a dangerous stalker. Players also investigate their surroundings, uncover clues, and attempt to understand what is happening inside the building.
The story contains three conclusions, including a true ending for players who successfully piece together the larger mystery.

Steam user reviews are largely positive about the atmosphere, story, and sound design, although players are more divided on the limited mechanics, character movement, and short runtime.
- Steam reviewer Cattleya called it “one of the best and most intense indie horror experiences” they had played recently, praising its disturbing atmosphere, fast-moving story, multiple endings, and developer support.
- Steam reviewer Ioladas described the sound as especially intense and said the game creates the feeling that someone may be watching you. They also considered it worth the asking price.
- Steam reviewer MetalCook Gaming, who disclosed that they received the game for free, praised its mixture of supernatural and grounded horror. They enjoyed seeing the story from different characters’ perspectives, although they felt the character movement could be improved.
- Steam reviewer Papi Geerick found it shorter and less frightening than Ghostcase’s previous game but still thought it was worth playing, particularly when purchased during a sale.
- Steam reviewer Mocroc offered a much more critical assessment, describing it as a simple walking simulator that relies heavily on jump scares. They recommended waiting for a substantial discount.

Dread Neighbor’s strongest idea is how quickly an ordinary apartment can stop feeling safe. Hallways, bedrooms, and familiar routines become sources of tension when the player begins noticing eyes in the darkness and subtle changes in the environment.
