What Are the Indie Game Awards?

The Indie Game Awards (The IGAs) is an annual awards-only ceremony dedicated entirely to honoring excellence in independent game development.

Unlike larger shows, the IGAs center creators instead of spectacle—no strict time limits, no corporate pressure, just developers celebrating developers.
The ceremony is produced by Six One Indie, a grassroots collective committed to elevating indie voices.

Who Selects the Nominees?

Nominees are curated by the IGAs Curation Jury, which includes:

  • Latin American Games Showcase
  • Wholesome Games
  • Women-Led Games
  • The MIX
  • Black Voices in Gaming
  • Frosty Games Fest (ANZ)
  • Playtopia Festival (Africa)
  • Southeast Asian Games Showcase

  • Jill Grodt

What Counts as an “Indie Game”?

The IGAs define an indie game as:

A game created by developers not owned or financially controlled by a major AAA/AA publisher, allowing for full creative freedom.

Publishers considered “indie-aligned”:

  • Kepler Interactive
  • Devolver Digital
  • Annapurna Interactive

Not considered indie:

  • Rockstar Games
  • FromSoftware
  • Kojima Productions
  • EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix, Sega, Bandai Namco
  • First-party studios (Xbox, Nintendo, Sony)

Eligibility Criteria for 2025

To qualify for nomination:

  • Release between Nov 1, 2024 – Oct 31, 2025
  • Early Access titles eligible
  • Ports alone not eligible
  • Major expansions allowed
  • Sales & popularity do not matter
  • All storefronts count
  • Generative AI strictly disqualifies a game
  • Only one general-category nomination per game
