Fear Friday: DISTURBING FEARS Makes Overtime Terrifying

Most horror games lock you in a haunted house. DISTURBING FEARS – Workplace leaves you alone in the office after everyone else goes home. Emma agrees to work late for extra money; once the building empties out, the silence is what starts to feel wrong.

Developed by Horribilia, DISTURBING FEARS – Workplace is a first-person psychological horror walking sim. It is the first installment in the studio’s DISTURBING FEARS anthology. Horribilia describes each episode as “based on true events,” suggesting it could have happened to you.

The Night Shift

The setup is deliberately ordinary. Emma stays behind at the office to make some extra cash, and the space grows quiet once her coworkers leave — quiet enough that the emptiness itself becomes the threat. According to Horribilia, the episode draws on real stories and leans on realism rather than spectacle.

Gameplay is a first-person walking simulator focused on atmosphere and unease. The developer cites the storytelling of Fears to Fathom and Chilla’s Art as inspiration — a useful shorthand if you know those low-key, vignette-style horror games.

When the Game Watches Back

The developer describes two optional systems. One reacts to your voice through the microphone (Player Voice Activity). The other uses your webcam to track movement (Real-Life Movement Tracking). Neither is required to play — a microphone and webcam are listed as recommended, not mandatory — but the intent is to blur the line between the game and your actual room.

That’s a distinctive idea for the genre, and early player reception suggests the added interaction is getting some attention.

Atmosphere and Presentation

The studio leans into a VHS aesthetic inspired by classic horror films of the ’90s. It pairs that with what it describes as photorealistic, true-to-life environments. There’s also an NPC text system — you receive messages from characters in-world — meant to deepen immersion.

It taps into a recognizable strain of modern indie horror. The locations are mundane and the grain is analog. Then comes the slow realization that something is deeply wrong with an otherwise ordinary night.

What Steam Players Are Saying

DISTURBING FEARS – Workplace arrived in early August as a free-to-play release. Its first wave of Steam feedback has been positive. Early players responded well to the atmosphere and late-night workplace setting. Still, the game is new enough that its longer-term reception is taking shape.

As a free release, it’s an easy game to try. It’s a low-risk place to start. The mix of microphone and webcam interaction, VHS presentation, and everyday workplace horror is worth a look.
