Big Hops is a vibrant 3D platformer from Luckshot Games that puts movement, creativity, and experimentation at the heart of exploration. Playing as Hop, a young frog armed with a powerful tongue and a backpack full of strange veggies, you’ll swing, climb, and build your own paths forward across massive open worlds filled with secrets, characters, and kinetic platforming challenges.

Instead of simply jumping from platform to platform, Big Hops encourages players to think like improvisers. Mushrooms become bounce pads, apples turn into custom tongue-swing points, and balloons create temporary platforms wherever you need them. It’s a game about freedom, flow, and discovering clever solutions—sometimes at ridiculous speeds.

🎮 Gameplay Overview
At its core, Big Hops is a movement-first action-adventure platformer. Hop’s moveset is deep and flexible, rewarding mastery while remaining playful and accessible:

- Roll, dive, crouch jump, wall run, free climb, swim, and belly slide
- Grind rails, ride minecarts, swing poles, and walk tightropes
- Combine momentum and tongue-swinging to reach exhilarating speeds
The standout mechanic is Hop’s frog tongue, which acts as a hookshot, grab tool, puzzle solver, and traversal system all in one. Doors, switches, plungers, levers, flowers, and even “lick-picking” become part of a surprisingly deep interaction system that continues to evolve hours into the game.
🌱 Build Your Own Path with Veggies
Exploration unlocks powerful Veggies, each changing how you move through the world:
- Mushrooms – Bounce pads for clearing huge gaps
- Acorns – Grow climbable vines on walls and ceilings
- Balloons – Stackable temporary platforms
- Oil Balls – Momentum-preserving hookshot points
- Apples – Place custom tongue-swing anchors anywhere
- Cacti – Fire tightropes across wide chasms
Since you can only carry one item at a time, Hop’s Backpack becomes essential. As you progress, you’ll unlock more slots, slow time while swapping gear, and customize your loadout to suit your playstyle.
🐛 Collectibles That Matter
Big Hops embraces collectibles—but gives them purpose:

- Dark Drips – Advance Diss’ mysterious mission and unlock secrets
- Dark Bits – Earn Trinkets that modify gameplay
- Veggies & Upgrades – Improve your backpack, wallet, and abilities
- Outfits & Dyes – Customize Hop’s look
- Real Bugs – Fill out your collection at Bugsy’s Conservatory
- Blueprints – Build delightfully busted gadgets
- Mixtapes – Play music on your boombox or Hop-man
Even Trinkets are physical objects—decorating your backpack directly.
🌍 A World Full of Character
Across four major regions—Forest, Desert, Ocean, and Mountain—you’ll uncover self-contained stories, factions, and conflicts. Offshoot locations like Gulley Gang HQ, Hydro Plants, and hidden coves make the world feel sprawling and unpredictable, packed with humor and charm.
Character designs include work by Steven Sugar (background designer for Steven Universe and The Owl House), reinforcing the game’s expressive, animated tone.
⭐ Reviews
“BIG HOPS succeeds because of the developers’ understanding of momentum, accessibility, and expression through movement: its systems constantly invite wacky experimentation with generous restarts, rather than punishing the player for failing, all of which reinforces a core philosophy of playful improvisation.”
8/10 – Giant Bomb
“Big Hops feels like you’re breaking the game and finding your own way, only to realize that Luckshot gave you that degree of freedom on purpose, and often knew how you’d use it.”
8/10 – GameSpot
“Tongue grappling combines with air diving to create an expressive traversal system where players can cross long gaps with the right planning. Roll off an edge, jump, and dive to extend movement in the same way Mario can with Cappy in Odyssey. It all feels remarkably smooth, especially when combined with some Breath of the Wild-esque wall clinging that allows players to cut through stages any way they like with careful stamina management.”

👥 Developer Spotlight: Luckshot Games

Founded in 2015, Luckshot Games set out to make high-quality, character-driven games with strong mechanical identity. Their previous title, Sausage Sports Club, launched on Kickstarter and released on Switch and Steam in 2018.
According to creator Chris, Big Hops began in 2019 with the goal of modernizing the 3D platformer—blending the creativity and emergent gameplay of titles like Breath of the Wild with classic platforming DNA inspired by Mario 64, Odyssey, Sonic Adventure, Psychonauts, and more.
💭 Final Thoughts

Big Hops stands out by letting players express themselves through movement. It’s not just about reaching the goal—it’s about how you get there. With its playful tone, deep mechanics, and build-your-own-solution design, Big Hops feels like a love letter to platformers that rewards curiosity, creativity, and mastery.
If you’re craving a 3D platformer that values freedom and momentum as much as charm, Big Hops deserves a spot on your wishlist.
